Surface preparation denotes a broad spectrum, which we find is largely made up of scabbling and planing requirements. Whether you need to remove high spots, or the height across the whole slab, our hire fleet comprises of a complete range of machinery for this type of work. Before we ascertain which one is suitable for your project, it is a good idea to understand the process and our recommendations.
All of our scabblers/ planers are provided with a tungsten tipped flail drum as standard. Tungsten is one of the strongest metals known to man, more so than industrial diamond, and it has the ability to withstand high temperatures.
When considering machines for hire, the most crucial aspects are often price and time; which is why these machines are so ideal.
The flails are incredibly hard wearing, which remove the concrete quickly and effectively, whilst also keeping the costs down.
Now we can determine which machine is most suitable for you. As a general rule of thumb, these figures can give you an idea of a starting point:-
- Circa 2-3mm removal – RT200 scabbler (110v or petrol)
- Circa 5-6mm removal – RT250 Scabbler (415v or petrol)
- Circa 10mm removal – RM320 Planer (415v, petrol or diesel)
However, this type of work is not a “precise science”. Before you make your final decision, we would always suggest speaking to us about your specific project. There can often be a number of variables on any one site, which may require a different drum set-up or a scabble and grind combination.
How long will my project take?
This will mainly be down to the amount you have to reduce and the size of the area. Although, another main factor to consider is power. We often receive enquiries where customers need to reduce more than 6mm of concrete, only have access to 110v power and are unwilling to hire a generator for three phase. This is your first stumbling block because the smaller machines simply aren’t designed for that amount of removal. Once you’re past the first couple of millimetres and into the aggregate, you need the power and weight of the larger machines to effectively achieve removal.
How long will the flails last?
More likely than not, the flails will have a much longer life time than you will even require, which is why standard wear is included in our hire rates for these machines.
How can I limit dust?
Whichever scabbler/ planer you hire, our advice is to always pair it with an 110v bin style dust extractor. They are simple to use, the cheapest vacuums on our fleet, but above all else, they are the best for the job because they keep up with the work rate of the main machines.
Why should I hire from Concept?
If you’ve reached this point in our blog post, you’ve probably realised that we aren’t like your local hire company with just one type of scabbler that has probably seen better days. We take all manners of surface preparation seriously, it’s what were good at and it’s what we focus our knowledge and expertise on. We are with our customers every step of the way, and are always on hand for each part of the process.
