Frequently Asked Questions About Floor Sanders

As with any kind of equipment, users often have questions about how to use floor sanders effectively. Therefore, in this blog post, the experts here at Concept Flooring Technology will answer some frequently asked questions about concrete floor sanders.

What is a concrete floor sander?

A concrete floor sanders is a heavy-duty machine designed to grind and polish the surface of concrete floors. Most sanders use a motor to power a rotating disc containing abrasive particles, which wears down the floor’s surface and thus removes roughness and unevenness.

Many are also compatible with both large and small dust extractor systems that can remove any dust and debris created during the sanding process.

How do they work?

Sanders use rotating discs with abrasive pads to grind down the surface of a concrete floor. These discs come in varying levels of coarseness, allowing the user to gradually grind the surface of the concrete down to the desired level of smoothness.

Most applications will call for a coarse grit sanding disc to be used first, which will remove any bumps or rough areas on the surface of the concrete. Once these areas have been smoothed out, you’ll likely need to switch to a finer grit sanding disc to further refine the surface of the concrete.

You may then choose to polish your concrete floor, which will involve using a grinder polisher fitted with a series of even finer abrasive pads until the desired level of shine is achieved.

What types of concrete floor sanders are available?

Here at Concept Flooring Technology, we offer both the Schwamborn STR701 Sander and the Eibenstock ELS225 Long Reach Pole Sander.

The STR701 sander is compatible with a range of silicon carbide sanding discs, copper tungsten discs and diamond grinding blades in various grades of coarseness. This makes it a very versatile option that can be used across a range of applications, including completing remedial work, keying an existing coating, or removing thin materials.

It is especially well-suited to removing laitence from a screed, which is essential for ensuring that you achieve a smooth and durable surface for subsequent work, such as tiling, painting, or sealing.

The ELS225 pole sander, on the other hand, is best for sanding elevated and hard-to-reach areas such as walls and ceilings. This lightweight handheld machine seamlessly rotates its 100° tilt angled head, making fiddly tasks much simpler, and is compatible with a range of sanding discs. It also comes with its own compact dust extraction unit, which results in a relatively mess-free experience.

Are floor sanders expensive?

Buying a floor sander outright can be expensive, and often feels like an unworthy investment if you are only likely to use it for one job. However, floor sander hire is very cost-effective and means that you won’t end up with unwanted equipment at the end of your project. You will have access to high-quality, fully-maintained plant hire equipment at fantastic rental prices.
