A Mini Guide to Using Floor Scabblers

A floor scabbler, also known as floor planers and scarifiers, is a walk-behind device that is mainly used on concrete surfaces. These machines are most suitable for reducing the height of a concrete slab, thick adhesive or to provide a textured finish.

Here’s an explanation as to how they work, why they’re useful, how to prepare to use them and who might benefit from hiring one!

How Do They Work?

Scabblers come in a variety of sizes and types that work along the same basic principle. They pound tungsten-tipped cutters into the concrete surface which breaks this layer down, allowing for it to be removed. This reveals a much rougher section of the concrete than the top layer as aggregate will now be exposed. This can be done to specific ‘grades’ which relates to how strong the concrete is. Plus, each machine has a height adjustment handle, depending on your requirements.

Why Are They Useful?

This is a useful tool as it allows for quick and effective removal. Rather than using a larger machine which may be cumbersome, the scabbler can be used to address specific imbalances quickly and efficiently. They are also suitable for bitumen removal in demolition projects as they don’t require smooth finishes.

It’s also useful as it exposes a rougher top surface of an aggregate which, depending on your purpose for the concrete floor, may be more ideal for bonding and adhesives. Along these lines, they may be used to create more grip on roads by giving them a rougher surface where they may have been worn down over the years.

Preparation for Use

It’s a good idea to adequately prepare your machine and surroundings before beginning to use your scabbler. For instance, you’ll want a tile-specific blade rather than a  carpet stripper if you’re using it on a swimming pool or tiled flooring. These steps will boost the efficiency of your operation, reducing the amount of time the equipment needs to be rented out.

Who Would Need Them?

Because they’re used to both remove materials and roughen surfaces, scabblers have a broad range of applications which make them a great choice for a number of sectors including:

  • Pools that need to reapply grout for tiles
  • Supermarkets and shopping malls
  • Most new build houses now use concrete flooring
  • Councils working on roads
  • Car parks
  • Construction and industrial sites
